HOW TO FILM YOUR OWN WEDDING

Six things we've learned from filming weddings with camcorders.

you don't need a film degree. you need one person who knows where the red button is and isn't afraid to leave the camera running.

01
Brief one person, not five
Pick one camcorder Queen or King — usually the friend who's organised, cousin with the steady hands. Hand them the one-page guide the night before. Everyone else can have a turn, but one person owns it.
02
Film the in-between
The ceremony films itself. What you'll want in ten years is the getting-ready, the speeches, the cousins at the bar, the grandparents on the dance floor.
03
Point it at the people
Don't wait for something to happen. The best footage is always the in-between -- someone mid-laugh, a grandparent watching from the side, the groom's face while the speeches are happening.
04
Hand it around
Pass the camcorder around the table. The shaky bits, the wrong angles, the accidental floor shots — that's the texture you can't fake.
05
Record in long stretches
The ceremony, speeches, first dance. Hit record and leave the room. Just avoid leaving it face-down in a bag between sets.
06
Don't review on the day
Don't watch it back at the reception. Watch it the week after, on the couch, when it'll hit the way it's supposed to.

questions, mostly answered

The three we hear most.

Do I need to know how to film?

no. the whole point is that you don't. hand it to your best mate, your sibling, your dad. press the red record button. stop pressing it when something stops happening. the one-pager covers everything else in under two minutes.

Can I keep the SD cards?

no — the SD cards have to come home, but we'll immediately send the footage, which is yours forever.

What if it breaks?

damage waiver is included as standard with every rental — no extra charge. accidents happen, and every camcorder is fully tested before it ships.
